Dr. Kamran M. Riaz

Kamran Riaz is a native of the Chicagoland area. Before high school, he completed memorization of the Qur’an in 9 months at the Institute of Islamic Education. After college, he obtained a doctorate of medicine degree from the UIC College of Medicine and completed his ophthalmology training at Northwestern University and cornea fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (Dallas). He has been a student at Darul Qasim under Shaykh Amin since year 2000. He is a frequent khateeb and speaker in the American Muslim community. He is the author of a recently published textbook, “Concerning Divine Wisdom in the Creation of Man”, a translation and commentary of an original Arabic text on human anatomy by the celebrated theologian and scholar, Abu Hamid al-Ghazali.

Dr. Riaz served as faculty at the University of Chicago (2016-2019), where he was an assistant professor and director of Refractive Surgery. He received several recognitions there, including the “Best Teacher Award” in 2018 by the residents and the “Chicagoland Teacher of the Year” award in 2019. Currently, he is a Cornea / Refractive Surgery Specialist and an associate professor at the Dean McGee Eye Institute (DMEI)/University of Oklahoma. Dr. Riaz has authored more than 65 peer-reviewed publications, 20 book chapters and given more than 80 presentations nationally and internationally. In April 2022, he was given the Aesculapian Award, the highest teaching award in the OU College of Medicine. In September 2022, he published an Ophthalmology textbook, “Optics for the New Millennium”, which is a standard textbook used by residents nationally.

He and his wife are blessed with three children.
